One Infamous Picture

Have you ever felt a high level of confidence that occurs when life is going well? Whether in your career or personal life, there are times when your hard work is paying off, plans are coming together and you feel on top of the world.

We all want to experience that and make it last as long as possible. Sometimes though it can produce a euphoria that separates us from reality.

Here is a picture of the San Francisco 49ers defense celebrating during the 2020 Super Bowl. Context is important so here are some details.

With 11:57 left in the 4th quarter, the 49ers are beating the Kansas City Chiefs 20-10. Then Pat Mahomes, KC’s quarterback, is intercepted and the entire San Franciso defense runs to the endzone for the now-infamous pic. Yet when the last second ticked to end the game, the Chiefs were ahead 31-20 and won the Super Bowl. The 49ers were shocked and the premature, assumptive feeling of victory was erased forever.

As a KC native and lifelong Chiefs fan, I’ve long remembered this moment as an example of being overconfident and assuming the outcome before it arrives. With that in mind, here are several assumptions to consider.

  • Don't assume your relationship with your child is fixed just because you had a heart-to-heart conversation.

  • Don't assume your marriage is healed just because you haven’t argued in a month.

  • Don’t assume you can stop taking your medication just because you're feeling better.

  • Don't assume your body will bounce back just because it always did when you were younger.

  • Don't assume your relationships will last just because you’ve been friends for a long time.

  • Don't assume your partner feels loved just because you said you loved them.

In reading these, some will surely hit home. My hope is they impart to you the importance of spending time now to question your assumptions before life's last seconds tick away for you and the people you love.
